The flavor of brown butter enhances plain butter cakes and spice cakes. The icing has little golden brown flecks in it. Make just before using.
Melt in a medium skillet over medium heat:
6 tablespoons unsalted butter
Heat, stirring constantly, until deep golden. Gradually whisk in:
1 1/4 cups powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
Scrape into a bowl and beat until smooth and spreadable; do not attempt to thin with liquid. Use immediately.
